Newt-ering the Opposition

I was standing and applauding Newt in my living room during the debates when the live audience did so.  But I suspect a good number of pro and semi-pro political commentators just don't get why Newt won SC.  I do.  We are too damned tired of people who, when anger is appropriate, swallow it and talk mealy-mouthed political BS. Witness any time that Romney opens his mouth.  And I'm not referring to all the stuttering and stammering that Romney does when challenged.  The simple fact is that Newt won our attention, and a lot of those votes in SC because he's not afraid to call a squid sandwich a squid sandwich, not a seafood salad on toast points.  Mitt IS a "moderate milquetoast from Massachusetts" (h/t Red State) and as such, more than anything else, not the guy who stands in opposition to the Saul Alinsky-ite/socialist in the White House.  Romney may be able to make a case that he can do this, be this, but to date he has not.

Newt won in SC because he proved that he is unashamed to be angry and not afraid of a fight.  We have not seen that in Romney, and we only suspect it in Santorum.  Well, the GOP base is angry, and the TEA Party has been angry since 2008, minimum.  So we're inclined to vote for the guy who is angry with us and willing to fight.  So far, that's Newt Gingrich and no one else.
